The boat shoe was designed by a dog- well, sort of. The first boat shoe was created in 1935 by Paul Sperry, he sought to construct a shoe that would grip the deck of a boat without leaving scuff marks. One day his cocker spaniel ran across the ice without slipping and Sperry got an idea. After studying the dogís paw, he designed a boat shoe with an outsole that mimicked the traction pattern of the paw. Sperry also designed the shoe to prevent scuff marks on floors. Although the boat shoe was intended to be worn by sailors, they have also become a fashion shoe in America, England and France. HealthyFeetStore.com carries Sebago, a New England shoe brand that is nautically-inspired and classically designed, as well as other shoe brands with the boat shoe design. Boat shoes aren't strictly for sailors any more.
