Frequently Asked Questions
What is a wide toe box and why does it matter?
A wide toe box is the front part of a shoe that gives your toes room to spread out naturally instead of being squeezed together. This extra space reduces pressure on bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas, and helps with balance and stability. If your toes feel cramped or you notice redness and irritation after wearing shoes, you likely need a wider toe box.
How is a wide toe box different from a wide width shoe?
Wide width refers to the overall width of the shoe across the entire foot, while a wide toe box specifically means more room in the front where your toes sit. You can have a standard-width shoe with a wide toe box, or a wide shoe with a narrow toe box. Many of our shoes offer both a wide toe box and wide width options for maximum comfort.
What foot conditions benefit from wide toe box shoes?
Wide toe box shoes help with bunions, hammertoes, claw toes, Morton's neuroma, and general forefoot pain by removing pressure from the front of the foot. They are also recommended for diabetic neuropathy, since reduced pressure lowers the risk of skin breakdown. People with swollen feet from edema or arthritis also find relief because the extra room accommodates changes in foot size throughout the day.
Can I use my own orthotics with wide toe box shoes?
Yes. Most of our wide toe box shoes come with removable footbeds, which means you can take out the factory insole and replace it with your custom orthotic or over-the-counter insert. Look for shoes labeled "extra depth" in addition to wide toe box, as the added interior volume ensures your orthotic fits without making the shoe feel tight.
How should a wide toe box shoe fit?
You should be able to wiggle all five toes freely without them touching the sides or top of the shoe. There should be about a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Try shoes on in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest, and wear the socks or orthotics you plan to use daily.
