A sandal is a type of footwear that is characterized by an open upper leaving the foot partially exposed. Sandals are typically secured to the foot with one or more straps attached to the sole. This design inherently creates less stability and overall, less support therefore leaving the foot more vulnerable to overuse and injuries.
There are a few characteristics within certain sandals that will add stability and support and ultimately reduce the chance of overuse or injury.
- Sturdy sole- it is preferable to purchase a sandal with a slightly sturdier sole, as opposed to a super flexible or bendable sole. The more support the sole provides the less work your foot does.
- Deep heel cup- buying a sandal with a deeper or more contoured heel cup will help create stability of the heel bone. When the heel bone is stable, the entire foot is stable.
- Arch support- try to find sandals that have a moderate Arch support or arch pad that will create control and support through the inside of the foot. This arch support will help distribute pressures correctly and prevent abnormal pressures that can be generated through the foot ankle knee and even lower back.
- Wide foot bed- buying a sandal with a wider sole or foot bed enables the weight of the body to be correctly distributed, reducing abnormal pressure pressures through the foot and leg
- Adjustability- sandal adjustability is created by buckles, straps, laces, ties, or hook and loop type fasteners. The more adjustability the sandal provides the more support. Adjustability will allow a customized fit that can accommodate individual foot shapes and biomechanical needs.
The following is a list of sandal brands that are known to provide a higher level of support and stability.
Knowing what to look for when buying your next summertime sandal will help keep your feet happy and healthy.
